Leather is the skin or hide of animals, cured
by TANNING to prevent decay and to impart
flexibility an toughness. Early man used pelts
preserved with grease or smoke for clothing,
tents, and containers.
Since the early 18th century machines have
been used to split the tanned leather into
desired thicknesses. Pelts are prepared by
de-hairing, cleaning, tanning and treating
with fats to ensure pliability. Leathers can
be glazed, stained, dye coloured, enameled,
or lacquered. Artificial leathers have been
produced since 1850, and is now mainly
manufactured from vinyl PLASTIC.
